I finished watching Dutton Ranch this week. It can be said that, so far, this is the best work in the Yellowstone series. The leads are Beth and Rip, who shone in the Yellowstone series. In Dutton Ranch, the two of them become the protagonists.

After Yellowstone Ranch is destroyed by a major fire, the two buy a small ranch in South Texas and name it Dutton Ranch, preparing to start over and continue the family’s glory. Misfortune never comes alone. A batch of hybrid cattle imported from Mexico, infected with foot-and-mouth disease, pushes Dutton Ranch toward bankruptcy again. The two bosses have no choice but to take two cowboys and work at the neighboring 10P Ranch.

10P Ranch is an old local ranch with more than a hundred years of history. The ranch owner loves most to repeat one line: back then, his ancestor Jackson stole two horses from a lord and founded 10P Ranch here, and the family was able to continue. Just like his ancestor, this family is still operating under the livestock business today, using beef cattle import and export as cover to smuggle fentanyl from Mexico into the United States.

After Beth and Rip discover 10P Ranch’s fentanyl smuggling, the major drug lord behind 10P Ranch also sends people after them.

That is roughly the outline of Dutton Ranch. This already no longer feels like a spin-off. Aside from the main characters, it has new supporting figures and new conflicts. Moreover, judging from the current plot setup, the writers intend to jump out of the Yellowstone universe and rebuild a new universe. The character shaping and conflict lines of this new universe have already been set up.

Paramount has confirmed that it has renewed the second season. We will wait and see.
