It is Terrible Not to Have True Common Sense
Weekly Thoughts
Recently, two small incidents brought about by the epidemic have sparked thoughts on common sense.
First, Dr. Zhang Wenhong, director of the Department of Infectious Diseases at Huashan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University in Shanghai, mentioned in an anti-epidemic knowledge sharing session that to have strong immunity, do not eat porridge for breakfast. Porridge has no nutritional value; you should eat eggs and milk. Before Dr. Zhang put forward this view, I always thought that porridge was nutritious and good for health. If I drank alcohol the day before, I must eat porridge the next day to warm my stomach, and I would feel much more comfortable. When Dr. Zhang’s view aroused heated discussion, I realized after a little thought that whether it is millet porridge, rice porridge, barley porridge, or eight-treasure porridge, it is nothing but carbohydrates and water. Even preserved egg and lean meat porridge and chicken porridge only have a small amount of protein. All porridge really does not have much nutrition and is not very useful for improving immunity.
Second, recently authoritative media have been stepping up publicity to guide everyone to implement a separate dining system. I also believe that separate meals and using public chopsticks and spoons reduce the spread of disease. The closest to separate meals in China is the buffet. Therefore, every time we dine together, I suggest everyone go to eat buffet. I didn’t realize that even public chopsticks and spoons are unsafe until I saw an experiment video done by NHK to explore how viruses, bacteria, and other microorganisms spread in buffet restaurants using fluorescent materials. In the experiment, it only takes 30 minutes for the “virus” to infect everyone through public spoons and chopsticks.
Drinking porridge for health is “correct” common sense for most people. When Dr. Zhang threw out the theory that eating porridge is useless, most people opposed and questioned it, thinking that Dr. Zhang was talking nonsense. But if you have a little high school chemistry and biology knowledge, it is easy to realize that Dr. Zhang’s view is extremely correct without complex calculation and analysis. When the media advocated the separate dining system, many people immediately realized the safety hazards of traditional table meals and supported it with practical actions, but when using buffets instead of table meals, they just moved from one dangerous situation to another. To truly realize the separate dining system, it may be necessary to strictly follow the old system of the Three Kingdoms.
Of course, today we are not discussing how to fight the virus by eating more eggs and drinking milk and implementing separate meals, but when facing “common sense” like drinking porridge for health and buffet hygiene safety, we can use more scientific and reasonable basic knowledge such as “nutritional ingredients of porridge” and “public chopsticks as a medium for transmitting microorganisms” to think more deeply, and not fall from one common sense error into another common sense error.
These scientific basic common sense, in fact, everyone has mastered in elementary, junior high, and high school. The fundamental reason why we have scientific common sense but continue to make “common sense mistakes” is that what we lack is not common sense, but the subjective consciousness to use common sense to analyze and judge. To be a scientific rational person, and train yourself to use scientific common sense to think independently, you can ensure that you master more common sense that conforms to facts, and you can grasp the essence of all things. The essence of science is not a road on the ground that becomes clear when more people walk on it. It does not shift with human will. It is a road less traveled. Only like Copernicus, who did not fear the Holy See and proposed the heliocentric theory after scientific calculations, can we discover true common sense.
