Dogville — I’ll Never Watch It Twice
After watching Dogville, one of Lars von Trier’s “USA” trilogy starring Nicole Kidman, I may never watch it a second time in this life.
When it ended, I couldn’t help wondering what I would do if I were a resident of Dogville.
Human nature can be so ugly that even God can’t save it; only by wiping it out might the world be a little better — hence the Flood in Western religion.
Never want to watch Dogville a second time.
A canyon can be bridged, but the abyss of desire is hard to fill; you don’t know what an ugly heart will do for something that doesn’t belong to it.
When the people of Dogville discover your “soft spot,” they don’t sympathize; they exploit it more viciously and demand more.
When the people of Dogville think they’ve done something for you, they don’t see it as the most basic decency; they expect double repayment.
It looked like a democratic vote kept Grace in town; the result seemed unanimous, but behind the scenes everyone had their own scheme.
Never let the “broken windows effect” happen to yourself. When the wall collapses, everyone pushes; when the drum splits, everyone beats it. Unlike Grace in Dogville, you most likely lack power behind you, and things can devolve into a tragedy like 《天浴》.
Human nature is inherently evil; only under the constraints of morality and law do people try to live “hypocritically.” In a society of acquaintances everyone acts a bit kinder, but once you’re where no one knows you, the ugly side often shows most fully.
