Zunyi, Tearing Devils and Tearing Silk Dolls

I had the honor of visiting the “Zunyi Meeting Memorial Hall” located at No. 96 Ziyin Road, Old Town, Zunyi, Guizhou. While sighing at the arduous journey of the Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army’s 25,000-mile Long March, I also saw a few interesting propaganda posters made by the Red Army at that time in the exhibition hall.

Tearing Devils

The plot of tearing devils in “Anti-Japanese Heroes” was criticized by various official media and self-media. The drama was also elected as the first of the anti-Japanese magical dramas due to its exaggerated plot and serious inaccuracy.

In fact, a propaganda cartoon exhibited in the Zunyi Meeting Memorial Hall is the prototype of “Tearing Devils”, but the meaning of the painting is not tearing devils, but a propaganda poster titled “White Army brother, how many times a day do you get beaten by the officers?”.

Tearing Silk Dolls

Speaking of tearing devils, I suddenly thought of a famous snack in Zunyi called “Tearing Silk Dolls”. The name sounds terrifying, but it is actually vegetarian spring rolls. The rice flour skin is rolled with various shredded radishes and bean sprouts, and then poured with spicy sauce. The taste is very good.

Other Propaganda Slogans

The Zunyi Meeting Memorial Hall also exhibited some other slogans of the Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army at that time. The language is simple but directly hits the pain of the peasants, workers, and lower-level Kuomintang officers who need to be united. It can be used as reference material for modern advertisers and marketing planners.
