Importance of Project Construction

Our country has a large population and little land, especially high-quality land suitable for vegetable production is even less. Under the situation of decreasing arable land, the scale of vegetable production is constantly expanding, and it is inevitable to increase the multiple cropping index to increase the land output rate per unit area and economic benefits. In the past decade or so, many places have formed specialized, intensive, and large-scale vegetable production bases. The rapid expansion and development of commercial vegetable production bases require high-efficiency, fast, high-quality, and high-level industrialized seedling bases or seedling centers to provide high-quality seedlings. In vegetable production, more than 60% of vegetable types need seedling transplanting. According to calculations, the annual seedling volume of vegetables in the country is 400-500 billion plants, and the decentralized one-family seedling raising method is still the main method at present. Therefore, there is an urgent need to realize the intensification, commercialization, and scale of seedling raising, and carry out annual planned production according to market demand.

The vegetable industry is one of the ten leading agricultural industries in Zhejiang, and is a pillar industry for promoting agricultural efficiency and increasing farmers’ income. During the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” period, centering on the development of high-efficiency ecological agriculture and actively building the regional main vegetable production area in the Yangtze River Delta, the vegetable industry in Zhejiang Province has shown a good development trend of stable area output and rapid growth of output value. According to statistics, in 2013, the perennial vegetable base in Zhejiang Province was 128,690 hectares, of which 25,430 hectares were in Hangzhou City, ranking first. The vegetable sowing area of the perennial vegetable base is 332,790 hectares, accounting for 51.0% of the vegetable sowing area, and the multiple cropping index is about 2.6. With the concentration of land, the demand for seedlings by planting bases is increasing.

Necessity of Project Construction

Realizing agricultural industrialization is the only way for our country to realize agricultural modernization. The essence of industrialization is to use modern science and technology and modern management to transform traditional industries and create emerging industries, so realizing vegetable industrialization must rely on the support of science and technology. The implementation of the project is a concrete embodiment of improving the technology availability rate and scientific and technological contribution rate, and is an inevitable trend to accelerate the development of vegetable industrialization.

Seedling raising is an important technical link in vegetable production, and seedling quality plays an almost decisive role in vegetable production effect. Only by taking the road of seedling industrialization can we continuously supply high-quality seedlings to producers. At present, there is no large-scale vegetable seedling breeding base in Yuhang District. Most of the seedlings used for production rely entirely on the “small-peasant style” conventional seedling raising method of one family. The seedling quality is poor and the survival rate is low. Looking only at the supply and demand of seedlings required for local greenhouse production of tomatoes and watermelons, the annual seedlings needed by the city are far from the seedlings that can be currently supplied. In terms of facilities, simple facilities are still the mainstay, the technological content is very low, the ability to resist natural disasters is poor, normal production cannot be guaranteed, market supply fluctuates, and it is difficult to meet the needs of development. Therefore, it is imperative to build an industrialized vegetable seedling production base.
